A team is a set of individuals - is a whole. In the business game, as in social or family contexts, everyone must comply with their own relative position and we shall not permit that one of ours fails to be in our team.

42 Lisboa is now located in an area of 1,200 m2, Factory Lisbon, where 800 students will learn programming for free. The software development school decided to become part of Beato’s “effervescent, multicultural and technological” environment.
The new 42 Lisboa campus was inaugurated last week at Factory Lisbon, in Lisbon’s Beato Innovation District. The space has capacity for 800 students, who will learn to program for free in a place surrounded by innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship.
42 Lisboa has been in the Portuguese capital since 2021, where it practices an “innovative and gamified method” that promotes learning without classrooms, timetables, or teachers. Since the opening of the school in Lisbon, which has now moved to Beato, they have received more than 50,000 applications and 1,500 students “from the most diverse nationalities and backgrounds,” 60 of whom have already completed the course.
The Beato Innovation District “embodies everything that 42 aspires to: innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship,” says Pedro Santa Clara, CEO of 42 Portugal. The new campus “represents the next chapter in our mission to offer innovative and accessible education, surrounded by technology companies, startups, creative initiatives and cultural events,” he adds.
Those responsible for the space are also pleased with the arrival of the school on the site. Gil Azevedo, executive director of Unicorn Factory Lisboa, says that the arrival of Escola (School) 42 in the Beato Innovation District “is a significant step towards affirming this community as an innovation center of international importance.”
At school 42 people learn through practice, by developing peer projects through a model that resembles a game. Students develop technical, but also communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, as well as other skills such as creativity, autonomy, and resilience.
The 42 programme is aimed at people over the age of 18, is free of charge as the school is funded by sponsors, and requires neither an academic background nor programming experience, with applicants expected to be “proactive, curious, creative, dedicated and enjoy working as part of a team.” Applications are open all year round for Lisbon and Porto. The learning methodology is based on “a project-based and peer learning experience, greatly enriched by the students’ face-to-face experience on campus,” the school explains in a statement.
Globally, 42 has more than 21,000 students in more than 50 schools in 30 countries and is recognized as “one of the best programming schools and one of the most innovative in the world, according to the WURI 2024 ranking.”
To ensure that the courses in Lisbon are free, 42 has the support of a group of sponsors that includes the Santander Foundation, Vanguard Properties, Fidelidade, the Galp Foundation, Reformosa, Bi4all, the DST Group, BA Glass, Casa Relvas, NTT Data, MEO, Axians, BNP Paribas, KPMG, The Claude and Sofia Marion Foundation, Rita and Filipe Botton, the Observador and Lead Consulting.
This is not the first learning center to choose Beato as its location. A year after opening its first space in Coimbra, the technological innovation and collaborative teaching project Tumo is coming to Lisbon in September. The Tumo educational programme, which is also free, is aimed at young people aged 12 to 18, and will contribute to equal opportunities and social mobility. This educational programme, which acts as a complement to formal education, is promoted by the Shaken not Stirred team, led by Pedro Santa Clara, who is also the CEO of 42 Portugal.
