The Municipality of Alandroal will be the first Portuguese council to join the 5G.RURAL project, an initiative that aims to promote digital inclusion and connectivity in regions with a low population density, by harnessing fifth generation technology. The project launch will take place on 31 May, a date that coincides with the commencement of works to renovate the Fortress of Juromenha and the new Visitor Centre it houses.
The initiative, led by a Consortium consisting of dstelecom, NOS, innovationpoint/dstgroup and IrRADIARE, will provide a boost to sectors including healthcare, education, agriculture, culture and tourism, by creating 5G infrastructure using a “neutral host” model. The project was developed as part of a European strategy to combat regional disparities and digital exclusion among rural populations.
According to the President of Alandroal Municipal Council, João Grilo, the arrival of 5G technology represents “a new era of connectivity for everyone living here, those who want to come here and those who visit us”. The local official highlighted the significance of the project in terms of the competitiveness of local businesses and the improvement of health and social care services, citing the possibility of “online appointments by videocall”, particularly important in a country with an aging population like Portugal.
The ceremony on 31 May includes the presentation of the 5G antenna and the dst Touring Culture Wagon, which will deliver cultural content to several villages. The Visitor Centre at Juromenha will also open. This interactive museum space will use technologies such as augmented reality and immersive environments, offering new ways of exploring the monument.
The total investment in renovating the Fortress of Juromenha Fortress was 5.36 million euros, 82% of which came from the 2020 and 2030 Alentejo funds, in addition to support from the European Investment Bank. The monument, classified as a building of public interest, was in an advanced state of decay. “If we did nothing, it was going to become unsalvageable”, explained João Grilo, highlighting the symbolic nature of the intervention and the links between heritage and technological innovation.
The “Sons do Rio” (“River Sounds”) cultural programme, part of 5G.RURAL, will open with a concert and talk by conductor Martim Sousa Tavares, transmitted in real time to the village of Pias via the new 5G network. Visual artist Mário Lopes will create a public artwork inspired by the River Guadiana, strengthening the council’s efforts to promote culture. With this project, Alandroal positions itself as a pilot region for the development of smart, inclusive communities, where technology serves social cohesion and heritage restoration.
