The poet Armando da Silva Carvalho, with his work “De Amore”, is the winner of the dst Grand Award for Literature, dedicated this year to poetry. The jury, in an unanimous decision, said the poem selected continues and deepens a poetic experience of great density and formal invention, assuming a cultural memory and context, transgression and the feel for questioning and aesthetic renewal. The award, worth 15,000 euros, will be presented on 28 June, in Theatro Circo, the ceremony coinciding with the opening of the Braga Book Fair, that will occupy the city’s Central Avenue and that will continue until 13 July. “Osso Vaidoso” will give a performance, and there will be special guests, a project by Ana de Deus and Alexandre Soares, that adds music to the poetry of well known poets, harmoniously associating these two art forms that complement and enhance one another.
Armando da Silva Carvalho was born in 1938, in Óbidos. He graduated in Law, attended the course in Philosophy, working later in publications with the Jornal de Letras and the Diário de Notícias, and became known for his translations of world famous writers, such as Samuel Becket, Aimé Cesaire, Jean Genet and Marguerite Duras. His work “Lírica Consumível”, won him the award of the Portuguese Society of Authors (Prémio Revelação da Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores), and he began a career dedicated to writing in which poetry brought prosodic discipline to a critical and ironic expression of existence. In his prose, Armando da Silva Carvalho associates ideological investment with the revival of narrative story, using a reflective, subversive and humorous process, questioning national myths.
This is already the 19th. dst Grand Award for Literature, one of the most important national awards and that has distinguished names such as Jacinto Lucas Pires, Maria Velho da Costa and Francisco Duarte Mangas. The award rotates from one literary form to another, one year distinguishing a book of poetry, published in its first edition in the previous two year period, and the following year, a work of prose, also published in first edition in the preceding two year period.
For José Teixeira, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the dst Group, this literary award “reinforces the way in which our company intervenes in society in an area that, clearly, lies beyond our core business”, while emphasising that “promoting culture and fine literature is a way of understanding social dynamics better, which inevitably is reflected in the way we conduct our business and how we show the world by undersigning the brand, «building culture»”. He concluded by saying that “Besides the Grand Award for Literature, the dst Group also promotes every year the dst International Emerging Artists - Photography competition and has an art gallery in Braga open to the public, now part of the shair project, a platform for supporting and promoting emerging artists”.
