The Domingos da Silva Teixeira group (dst), a construction company from Braga, with works in various parts of Portugal and abroad, has set the goal of obtaining economic, social, and environmental benefits by associating with its employees. And thus the CarSharing dst platform was born, created by Innovation Point, also part of the group.
The CarSharing dst platform is designed to share car rides and order shipments. The goal is to optimize transported cargo, reduce the number of individual trips made by employees, and provide an opportunity for employees to benefit from planned car rides for personal reasons.
Only one month after its effective launch, the numbers show that it was a winning bet. "From the 270 thousand kilometres registered per week, 5535 kilometres of those were shared, representing a decrease of 1262 kilograms in CO2 emissions, and savings of 700 euros, equally shared by participating employees and the company", reveals João Coelho, manager of the platform.
The numbers also show that only 2% of the company’s over 1000 employees participated, but he adds: “We are just beginning, and there are more and more people interested.”
João Pereira, head of development for CarSharing dst, explains how it works: "Any Group employee can access the platform and register their journey, date and time, as well as the type of vehicle, personal, company owned, or rented by dst”.
After that is completed, another employee who is also planning a trip, runs a search by date and destination, and if there are any options within a 10% difference, they can request the car ride, cargo, or parcel transport.
"From there, the two employees receive the notifications and the platform facilitates the contact between them, so they can arrange the final schedule", João Pereira adds.
There is also the fleet manager, "who can assign or suggest car rides and facilitates the assignment of vehicles, always thinking in distance economy", says João Pereira.
Considering that in addition to the economic factor, there is also the environmental factor, the project also involves the participation of Cecília Aguilar, Director of the Environment Department, and Maria José Ramalho, Environmental Technician.
"The environmental factor has always been present in the dst group. Already in 2011, we launched the GPS control system on all our routes to save on fuel. The new platform is the perfect ally to continue this work", said Cecília Araujo.
The number for the reduction of CO2 emissions is promising, and Maria José Ramalho points out that now it is important to "join campaigns to raise awareness of all employees".
"Some still have some reservations, but things are changing", concludes João Pereira
