In the business game, as in social or family contexts, everyone must comply with their own relative position and we shall not permit that one of ours fails to be in our team.
The debut of dst as the winner translates the gradual and steady rise of the Braga construction company in the sectorial ranking and results from its superiority in financial indicators such as the solvency or profitability of assets and equity. But the index that operates in the conglomerate led by José Teixeira, the engineer who succeeded the founder, is intangible and adopts the acronym FIB – Felicidade Interna Bruta (Gross Domestic Happiness). José Teixeira prides himself on a corporate culture that stimulates art and creativity, centered on the valorization and well-being of the working community: courses in rhetoric and theater/drama, prizes in literature and photography, and an improbable pampering such as a weekly manicure session, to massage the self-esteem and beautify the soul, available at a beauty salon near the engineering area. At dst headquarters there are regular innovation talks, weeks dedicated to health and the environment, holiday camps and half an hour a day aimed at generating ideas and feeding the innovation box. Talented suggestions are soon applied. Pregnancy is a valuable factor in the organization and on the day of birth the mother receives a bottled orchid. The group "assumes the importance of culture, of encouraging creativity and well-being and the need for constant training", summarizes José Teixeira. This entrepreneurial distinction is the triumph of "a management model that adopts an almost tribal approach," combining "an emphasis on operational efficiency with a stimulus for innovation and knowledge and training of employees." In 2016, the goal is to have 10% of the upper management attending masters, post-graduate and doctorate courses. But if the local clustered builders were badly damaged by the recession that hit the sector, how did dst escape unharmed? No manager likes to manage in a state of crisis, but José Teixeira always conveyed to his teams the message that "when the crisis is for everyone, we do not lose competitiveness and we can benefit from it." Philosophy is always "facing a crisis is looking for an opportunity, not a fatality," aware that "anticipation, flexibility and adaptability of the Darwinian type are part of the genetic code" and allow us to face these challenges “with greater confidence.”
