Conductor Martim Sousa Tavares appeared at Braga Hospital, where he delivered an inspirational talk, organised by dstgroup. The initiative aimed to highlight the importance of art and culture as means of transforming the hospital environment.
Yesterday, as part of an initiative that sought to underline the value of art and culture as a means of transforming the hospital environment, Braga Hospital played host to the event ‘Liderar pela Beleza’ (Leading with Beauty), organised by dstgroup and featuring an appearance by Martim Sousa Tavares.
In an inspirational talk, the conductor and artistic director spoke of how art and culture can positively influence communities and drive change.
Martim Sousa Tavares drew a parallel between an orchestra and an organisation, saying that both have three essential pillars for ensuring everyone successfully fulfils their role or mission: knowledge; intellect (for performance and interpretation) and empathy.
“Nobody works alone. I am the conductor, but the ones giving the performance, the ones making the music, are the musicians”, he explained, highlighting the importance of group dynamics. “By working as a team, with everybody sharing responsibilities, it is possible to overcome unforeseen circumstances”, he explained.
Martim Sousa Tavares also spoke about mistakes and how to deal with them. “There are going to be mistakes and they occur in the parts where we are most confident, because we let our guard down. Mistakes are part of human nature”, he mused, suggesting that what matters is how we deal with them.
The audience was also treated to a performance of a few tunes on the piano by Martim Sousa Tavares.
Representing ULS Braga, Paula Vaz Marques, clinical director of hospital care, welcomed Martim Sousa Tavares and, addressing the audience, stressed the importance initiatives of this type. “Our world cannot be limited to illnesses and appointments. We also need moments like this, where we come together and share, which are also crucial for mental health”, explained the clinical director.
This was another initiative promoted by the dstgroup in collaboration with ULS Braga. It also recently spearheaded the ‘Ler no Hospital’ (‘Read in Hospital’) initiative, which included an appearance by author Gonçalo M. Tavares. dstgroup also donated a bookcase of books from publisher Livros Cotovia. This donation aims to offer patients moments of relaxation and enrichment during their time in hospital.
