In the business game, as in social or family contexts, everyone must comply with their own relative position and we shall not permit that one of ours fails to be in our team.
SMART CITIES
The dstgroup, as part of a consortium also made up of the Aga Khan Foundation, Sintra Municipal Council, IrRADIARE, Card4B, Watt Is, the University of Lisbon and International Development Norway, completed the Living Laboratory for Decarbonization and Climate Change Mitigation, S.M.I.L.E. – Sintra Motion and Innovation for Low Emissions, in the iconic Bairro da Tabaqueira in Sintra, leading to a saving of 16 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
The aim of this project was to promote decarbonization activities, based on experimenting with technological solutions in the areas of the circular economy, mobility, energy & buildings, community & art, as well as involving citizens in the process and fostering the arts.
The business group delivered an end-to-end solution in an integrated manner for the implementation of S.M.I.L.E’s Renewable Energy Community (CER), installing a solar production plant at the Alfredo Silva school, promoting the fight against energy poverty and covering 45 homes.
A cloud platform, based on artificial intelligence, virtually manages all of the community’s energy, enabling people to become involved in the transition to greater energy independence in their own neighborhood.
The inhabitants of the Tabaqueira neighborhood can now use a waste management app that encourages the separation and correct disposal of household waste, which is linked to a global gamification and engagement system that promotes more sustainable communities through the adoption of habits for conscious living. By adopting a sustainable lifestyle, users can earn ClimaS – climate currency that can be exchanged for discount vouchers and promote the planting of trees in Sintra.
A SmartCity platform has also been implemented, which analyzes all the Living Laboratory’s verticals and collects indicators for the various activities taking place in the neighborhood, as well as the KPIs of the vertical platforms implemented in the areas of the circular economy and the environment, sustainable urban mobility, energy and buildings and Community, Art and Culture.
Concerning the Community, Art and Culture area, the zet gallery and the dstgroup proposed a program of artistic residencies with the aim of revitalizing the Tabaqueira neighborhood through the intersection of different disciplinary areas, in close connection with the community and its memory, which is essential for building a sustainable future.
A relationship was established between art and the community through various activities to raise awareness and sustainably transform the neighborhood, resulting in murals depicting residents, photographic archives, manuals for identifying invasive species, handmade irrigation systems, the renovation of flowerbeds and the fountain, as well as the re-imagining of soft mobility, which resulted in true artistic objects.
Together with the members of the consortium and the inhabitants of the Tabaqueira neighborhood, the dstgroup organized activities aimed at promoting energy literacy and other more cross-cutting activities on the topics of digital, mobility, sustainability and environmental awareness, as applied within S.M.I.L.E, with the aim of connecting the community to the project, whilst transmitting knowledge and a sense of belonging.
“This project represented a huge challenge in testing innovative decarbonization solutions and testing win-win partnerships between the city and industry. The dstgroup has proven to be a benchmark partner in the delivery of clean tech solutions, with a broad value proposition that not only accelerates the green and digital transition, but also includes the appeal of the New European Bauhaus, through offering arts literacy to the community,” mentioned Raul Bordalo Junqueiro, Head of SmartCities and Business Development at the dstgroup.
The consortium also included dstsolar, innovationpoint, mosaic – the dstgroup’s Innovation Hub for SmartCities – and zet gallery, dstgroup companies and brands, with the support of the EEA Grants Environment, Climate Change and Low Carbon Economy program.
It should also be noted that these solutions could be replicated in other parishes in Sintra, as well as at the national and international level.
