At the award ceremony of the XXI Grand Prize for Literature dst (GPL dst), which this year distinguished Manuel Alegre with his work of poetry "Bairro Ocidental", was held on July 1 at Theatro Circo in Braga. The distinction, with a monetary value of 15 thousand euros, was given by José Teixeira, chairman of the dst group's Board of Directors, at an event attended by Hernâni Loureiro, Deputy Minister of Culture, Lídia Dias, Councilor of Culture of the Municipality of Braga, and Vítor Aguiar e Silva, President of the jury of the GPL dst. The event also included a concert by Angolan singer Aline Frazão, who presented her latest album "Insular", an album of original tracks recorded on the small Scottish island of Jura, with the production of Briton Giles Perring and with the decisive participation of guitarist Pedro Geraldes (Linda Martini).
"Western Quarter" is the winning book of this year's dst Grand Prize for Literature, dedicated to poetry. The jury found that this work of literature was raising awareness, a voice of protest and indignation, a non-conformist portrait of the country and the dictatorships that govern us, namely the markets, with obvious points of contact with "Praça da Canção", one of the most celebrated books by Manuel Alegre, published half a century ago.
Having registered a record number of entries in this edition, the Grand Prize for Literature dst is once again held to affirm itself as an essential reference in the cultural panorama of the country. With a rotating system, distinguishing a work of poetry and then a work of prose, alternatively, the prize has already been awarded to names like Luísa Costa Gomes, Mário de Carvalho, Maria Ondina Braga, Nuno Júdice, Maria Velho da Costa and Jacinto Lucas Saucer.
The event was part of the program of the Book Fair in Braga, an initiative that started on July 1 and will go onto July 17, with the sponsorship of the dst group. Along with the awarding of the Grand Prize for Literature, the dst group was present at the fair with a "dst space", which included a daily schedule of reading sessions, staging and musical shows, among other cultural and artistic manifestations.
