The Muzeu, the first venue in the region entirely dedicated to contemporary art, is thus embarking on a path of growth that appears to be firmly rooted in the local community.
Two weeks after the official opening on April 25, the Muzeu – DST Contemporary Thought and Art has already surpassed 10,000 visitors, exceeding its “highest expectations.”
The Muzeu, the first venue in the region entirely dedicated to contemporary art, is thus embarking on a path of success that appears to be rooted in the local youth community.
According to the museum’s director and curator, Helena Mendes Pereira, contrary to what one might think, a large portion of the visitors consists of young, local residents. A detail that she sees as a sign that the city “was missing a project linked to the contemporary arts.”
“We’ve been welcoming all kinds of visitors, of different ages. We’ve also had quite a few tourists, but it’s worth noting, in fact, the predominance of the local public and young people, who are traditionally a less active and less frequent museum-going audience, according to international studies.”
Although the peak in visitors occurred on opening day, with over four thousand admissions, the steady flow of visitors—especially on Thursdays—was another aspect that surprised the director.
“On Thursday, we had visitors all day long, and we actually expected attendance to drop off in the evening—since people aren’t used to going out at night, given that museums aren’t open then—but that didn’t happen.”
Not even with the SC Braga games did the people of Braga lose their enthusiasm for visiting the venue. Which, in the director’s words, only shows that Braga “is a lively, dynamic, and diverse city.”
Alongside the permanent exhibition, the cultural program has also proven to be a hit.
All events drew an audience; some sold out, and others even had “people lining up,” assures the director, who views this as a “winning bet” and believes it “should be maintained.”
“We will continue with our parallel programming, so the expectation is that participation in the programming—in dance, jazz, and music—will also be maintained.”
This month, at the Museum, the celebration of International Museum Day, observed on May 18, is special because it spans the entire week.
The highlights are mainly on May 21 and 22, which will feature the launch of the museum’s book and a special guided tour led by the director and architect Carvalho Araújo, as well as a concert by Brazilian musician Amaro Freitas, respectively.
“It’s a week in which we celebrate International Museum Day with a special program, so we also expect it to be a very busy week in terms of attendance.”
