The Institute of Science and Innovation for Bio-Sustainability has one year of activity, but dozens of projects. Yesterday, it signed a protocol with a new chair for the telecommunications area.
After only one year of existence, the Institute of Science and Innovation for Bio-Sustainability (IB-S) of the University of Minho (UMinho) already has 32 ongoing projects, and has raised ten million euros in funding. Yesterday, in the celebration of its first anniversary, it took another step closer to the corporate sector, with the signing of a protocol for the creation of a second tenure with partner companies.
The Proef-DSTele-com/IB-S tenure is geared towards sustainable telecommunication networks for the digital society of the future, and its main objective is to facilitate teaching and research projects in this area, as explained yesterday by the IB-S Executive Officer, Tiago Miranda.
The tenure, that joins the companies Proef, DSTelecom and IB-S, represents a direct investment of 400 thousand euros in the next four years and constitutes “another step towards the narrowing, not only necessary but vital, between the academy and the corporate sector” Tiago Miranda said, highlighting “the innovative tenure module in the relationship it proposes with partner companies”.
The research to be developed in "close collaboration with the companies" will have "national and international impact", said the Executive Officer of IB-S, who announced being in negotiations with companies to create two additional tenures, which he believes can be closed during the next year.
The idea is to create a tenure network that works not only for them, but among them01, said Tiago Miranda.
A strategic project for UMinho
The Institute of Science and Innovation for Bio-Sustainability (IB-S) é assumed by the Rector of the University of Minho, Rui Vieira de Castro, as a "particularly relevant project for the University, for the region, and for the country".
The Rector highlights the aggregation to other University units that are at the root of its creation, which contributes to its multidisciplinary nature, but also the coordination with external entities.
As for its multidisciplinary nature, Rui Vieira de Castro also highlights "UMinho's great tradition in the development of projects that seek to overcome boundaries between the various scientific areas".
The Rector also recalled the impending threats on the planet and mankind, which demand answers. "We must think about the paths that must be pursued in order to face the diagnoses made, and the IB-S is a University projects that wants to be a part of this path towards a more sustainable world."
Rui Vieira de Castro reaffirmed the rectory's commitment to this project, but underlined that the IB-S "will be so much more successful as it is able to captivate and articulate other wills", as a witness in the new tenure formalized yesterday.
To the Rector of the UMinho, company tenures are an "excellent example of a path to follow upon".
